Thursdays - Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms
Seminars are held on Thursdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm and
2.00pm to 4.00pm, each with a mid-session break for refreshments.
Please see the detailed programme and dates which follow.
These sessions are in part the result of requests by students who have followed the lecture series. In lectures it is difficult to make time to discuss important questions, answer queries or follow up new lines of thought. While this ensures that the subject in hand is ‘covered’, it also means that each session gives rise to a host of interesting and important ideas that cannot be addressed.
By contrast, the seminar can do precisely this:
enabling a balance between a led, taught course
of set study - combined with the excitement of
disciplined open exploration of the subject by
everyone involved.
Each seminar series is therefore designed to provide:
● an in-depth study of the texts in their ownright;
● an exploration of the texts as they affect us and
● our own world;
● a way of developing critical and clear ways of
● reading, analysing and talking about texts and
● their ideas.
These are ongoing courses and each ‘syllabus’ outlined below
will take several years to complete. While new students will
have missed the earlier writers, the real heart of each study,
the development of method and analysis as outlined above,
remains constant, so that there will, therefore be no problem
for anyone joining as each course proceeds.
